The 4th of July is one of my favorite holidays. I love the cheesy parades, dressing you two in patriotic garb, and cuddling up in a blanket for some fireworks. This 4th had none of those. Well, kinda. For one whole week we barfed. And barfed. And barfed. IT was rough. I hoped and hoped by the 4th we’d be better but Lyla just wasn’t. So we spent the day trying to get better. I had ordered the cutest outfit and made the cutest bows and flower belts. Wasted. By the evening we were feeling a little more perky so we went up Yankee with grandma. We had some KFC and enjoyed a release from cabin fever. We had flag glow sticks and tried to salvage the day. I won’t lie, I enjoyed the extra snuggles under the blanket. Just as we got back into town, the fireworks began. We sat on the tramp and watched them. Lyla, you weren’t too sick to get excited and watch with wonder. Lottie, they scared you poor girl. I made a mental note to watch fireworks next year on the tramp with just us four. It wasn’t what I had hoped for but we still had fun together.
The following day was a little better so we did some more 4thy type things and pretended it was the 4th.
Snaps and Sparklers Oh My
{nobody was scared! Love that Lyla broke out the magnifying glass for the snaps. LOL}
We also did some Independence Day play that week.
Independence-Themed Sensory Bin
{the styrofoam stars made for a delicious snack for you Lottie. Lyla loved the rotollini pastas..a new addition}
FIREWORK PLAY!!!!!
Whenever I read play blogs I find myself anxious and feeling like a loser. They always talk about following your child’s interest and boast these brilliantly concocted ideas made just for their child. Do I not pay attention to your interests? Then I took a deep breath. Lyla, you have been INFATUATED with fireworks this summer. Any boom we might here evokes a shriek of “fireworks!” following by your racing to the window. It’s been funny to watch you LOVE them so much. Sooo. I consulted my usual sites and pinterest for firework play and found nothing. Ziltch. Guess that’s when I got creative. These next two ideas were concocted just for you little one and I’m pretty proud of myself if I don’t say so myself.
Hard-Candy Fireworks!
We went to the garage. You were given the hammer which we always take away from you. You busted up tons and tons of those cinnamon hard candies. Then you dumped it onto a paper that had glue in the shape of a firework. It was brilliant. You loved it. You gave me the same shriek and said “It’s a firework mom!”. You then danced all around the garage and the driveway making it explode. I beamed.
Pop Rocks Explosion!
This idea hit me in the middle of the night. What could mimic a firework (safely…lol). Then I remembered a old favorite of mine…POP ROCKS!! I figured them exploding in your mouth wasn’t grand enough so we used the old standby of vinegar and baking soda with a side of pop rocks. I set out each ingredient. You did the dumping. It was a big hit. You had all your tools for dissecting this experiment and discovered all sorts of things about these fireworks through your magnifying glass.
