08/09/12

This day we planned to go to Bath Tub. It’s a little gem hidden in Laie that the locals have blocked off with lava rock to make a little “bath tub”. It’s supposed to be so fun for little ones to swim in but again it was overcast and had very harsh, stormy waves. The way you get there is just by parking along a particular mile marker and then walking through the beach house’s backyards and then climbing the lava rock down quite a ways down into the beach. Before we got the bottom I had a bad feeling and thought we should leave. It was high tide and there was virtually NO beach. A few steps in and we had to start climbing back up the rocks because the tide had washed us out. That’s when I spotted him!! A BIG Monk Seal swimming in the bath tub!! Then we spotted another one! TWO Monk Seals maybe 10 feet from us swimming. When they spotted us they kept coming closer and closer. I got nervous! Dad said they were harmless but I just felt uneasy and wanted to go. The seal stopped about 6 feet form us and just watched us for quite a while. I now think they’re used to being fed and were begging. They eventually left and we climbed back down. We also spotted some HUGE crabs along the rocks. Even though we didn’t get to swim, the experience was well worth it. Lyla was scared of the seal, but Charlotte got so excited and started squawking!
